Zone – Outgoing AXFR

In this article, you will learn:

Uses for Outgoing AXFR

You will most typically set up outgoing AXFR for primary domains (i.e. those storing record data directly on WEDOS DNS servers), for which you want to set up secondary DNS, typically a distribution network other than WEDOS.global. Other use cases include DNS probes which may use AXFR to retrieve data from either primary, or secondary DNS. WEDOS supports outgoing AXFR for either type.

Outgoing AXFR Setup

To set up outgoing AXFR for either a primary or secondary domain in WEDOS.zone DNS, follow these steps:

  1. Log into the WEDOS.global admin panel ⧉.
  2. In the navigation panel on the left, select Zone.
  3. Select the domain you want to set up outgoing AXFR for from the list.
  4. Check Allow outgoing AXFR for this domain and enter the IPs of servers allowed to request AXFR from our servers. For multiple IPs, separate them with spaces.
  5. Create and specify TSIG only if your system uses it.
  6. Save and Apply changes.

Allowing outgoing AXFR for three IPs (Ipv4 and IPv6), no TSIG

The outgoing IPs must meet the following criteria:

  • Each must be a valid IPv4 or IPv6 address.
  • The total length of the field must not exceed 255 characters (any excess values will be truncated).

This setup allows servers with the listed IPs to request AXFR from any ns.wedos.tld server (where tld includes cz, eu, com and net), or the associated IPv4/IPv6 address. Whitelabeled domains and associated IPs are also accessible.

FAQ

Can I AXFR specific Anycast servers using their IP?

No, you can only access the most available point as determined by BGP.

How do I set up outgoing AXFR for multiple domains at once?

The admin panel doesn’t currently support bulk setup for outgoing AXFR. You can, however, use the dns-domain-update WAPI command.

I whitelabeled a custom domain and IP address, but none of them are responding to AXFR. What’s going on?

Either the requesting server’s IP isn’t on the outgoing AXFR IP list, or Whitelabel is configured incorrectly.
